November 2003 Minutes
Location: Artistry Glass Studio
The meeting was called to order at 1430.
The minutes were approved from the last meeting.
Old Business:
§ Quorum Vote: Raychel explained the purpose behind considering the
definition of a quorum, as defining the minimum number of people who need to
vote on an item for the decision to be legitimate. The options that were
presented to the group for voting included:
1. 12 voters minimum-this means that at least 12 members would have to cast
votes (either in person at the meeting or via email before the meeting) for the
results to be considered valid. Within that vote, a simple majority would rule.
2. No quorum required-a simple majority of those voting in person at the meeting
or via email before the meeting would be considered a valid result. The
provision is that any item to be voted on at a meeting be discussed at the
previous meeting, and published in the agenda, so members could plan to be
present to vote at the meeting, or vote via email before the meeting.
3. 20% of the paid membership-whatever the tally of paid members in the
organization at the time of the vote, at least 20% of that number would have to
cast votes in person at the meeting or via email prior to the meeting. Of those
voting, a simple majority result would be valid.
Announcements:
§ Beads of Courage: Jean related that the group received a beautiful
thank-you note from the Social worker from Sun State at Childrens Hospital in
Phoenix, and from UMC in Tucson, acknowledging our general donations of purple
heart beads. Jean requested that the beads keep coming, as the number of
children with cancer has not diminished.
§ Larry Scott Class: Judi announced that the class is now full. Sign-up
sheets will be circulated for members to attend a dinner with Larry Friday and
Saturday evenings, possibly Thursday or Sunday evenings as well. Categories for
the pot-luck items for Sundays all day demonstration will also be passed out to
ensure adequate numbers of main courses, salads, desserts and extras.
§ FosterFire: all boro is 25% off, with plenty of Glass Alchemy left.
Some Moretti is left, but Robin suggested customers check with her prior to
getting excited.
New Business
§ Quorum Vote: The vote on the definition of a quorum was called for
and seconded. The results of the vote were no quorum required. In the future,
all pending issues coming to a vote will be presented for discussion and
exploration at one meeting, and will be included in the agenda for the next
meeting. A simple majority result will be considered valid and binding.
§ Glass show at Desert Botanical Garden: Raychel presented information
that the DBG has expressed interest in conducting a joint show with AZSGB, which
would be similar in format to Glass Expressions held at MAC; the table fees
would be split between the two organizations; each vendor would be required to
donate an item for a raffle; the marketing costs would be split, although AZSGB
would do the majority of the actual work involved. It was suggested to consider
targeting early March for the show, and Raychel was requested to determine
whether people strictly interested in attending the glass show would have to pay
admission fees. The group demonstrated interest in the event, and Raychel will
pursue additional information with DBG.
§ Bead Museum Show: Carol Saker reported that the shows date was moved to
the end of March or beginning of April, and she and Joan, the museum
representative, are working to form a committee to begin working on the details
of the show. Anyone interested in helping is asked to email Carol at
dcsaker@earthlink.net
§ New Member Bead Donations: Cynthia requested additional bead donations,
wrapped, for the new member treasure chest. The beads should be in the $5-$20
range. We had 3 new members with us at the meeting: Hal, Jeannie and Patricia,
all of whom received beads. They were welcomed to the group, and shared a little
information about themselves with the members.
§ Bead Exchange: Tracy announced that this months exchange required
participants to use silver in some way. The bead exchange beads were
distributed. She also announced that she will plan to have a monthly exchange
(although there will not be one in December to facilitate the holiday bead
exchange at the holiday party). She is also planning 4 quarterly exchanges that
will be more elaborate and challenging. The first quarterly exchange, in which
beads will be due at the end of March, is core formed vessels. She would like
for the participants of the quarterly exchanges to get together for coffee and
share tips and tricks learned while making the required bead.
§ Glass Expressions: The group raised $475 in table revenues for AZSGB
and the same for MAC. Most of the vendors recovered their expenses, and the
raffle raised almost $400 for MAC.
Next Meeting:
The Christmas party will be on December 7, 2003, beginning at 3:00 pm, to be
held at Jean Donaldson's house. Raychel will send out a sign up list for potluck
dishes. Several exchanges will be held: a holiday bead exchange, in which beads
should be wrapped with the creators name on the inside of the wrapping, and a
white elephant exchange, in which members are invited to gift wrap spare items
or items they don't use. Those who put something in will get something out.
The meeting was adjourned at 1530.
A lentil demonstration was given by Judi Binderman.
A holly leaf demonstration was given by Cynthia Shelton.
Respectfully submitted:
