Minutes of the ASGB Meeting - 7.20.03 As secretary pro tem, I hereby submit the minutes for the meeting of 7.20.03. Meeting was held at Carol Sakers. Present were Judi Binderman, Catherine Guler, Raychel Stein, Cynthia Shelton, Michelle Parchinski, Carolyn Henderson, Christine Baker, Marty Beck, Donna Monce, Carol Saker, Laurie Nessel, Jane Praxel, Nancy Logan and Jodi Lindsey. Laurie Nessel handed out application forms for Glass Expressions with several corrections. Deadline to submit images to Don Merrifield is September 1st. You must indicate how many postcards you intend to purchase, in quantities of 25. Judi Binderman reported on Creative Destination, the new bead store at Alma School and US 60. They are very pleased with the contributions of local glass artists and would like to see more. Judi noted that it is important to continue to bring in new items to keep the customers coming in. Judi updated us on visiting artists. Larry Scott agreed to come for a 2-day workshop Jan 9 & 10 (Friday and Saturday) with social gathering open to all members each evening. Workshop costs will be $225 per person. Sunday, Jan. 11th will be demonstration at Jean Donaldsons for $15 plus a potluck contribution for lunch. Terry Caspery Schmidt was undecided about accepting a demonstration invitation. She is concerned that her technique is slow and just dots and not of interest. She wants to think it over. It was suggested that we invite local artists including ASGB members to demonstrate. Judi discussed the issue of serving our growing membership. She suggested that we can no longer be as casual as we’ve been and maintain value to all our members. Volunteers at the meeting agreed to perform the following tasks: Greeter and Keeper of the Bead Basket- Cynthia Shelton Christine Baker mentioned how welcomed she felt at her first meeting by Isreal Brito, who gave her a bead as he did all new members. Anyone who wants to may donate a bead for this purpose. Cynthia will be responsible to bring the beads to each meeting and seek out new members, welcome them and offer a bead. We may make this an initiation ritual. Only members who have paid their dues are eligible. Meeting Moderator- Laurie Nessel Moderator will act as president, facilitating discussion and setting agenda. Agenda items may be submitted to her at laurienessel@hotmail.com by the Friday before each meeting. It was decided that after the next meeting, all meetings will be held at 2:00 on the third Sunday of the month except for the Christmas meeting. It was decided that meetings would begin with a meet and greet and eat, proceeded by business, then show and tell, then a demo. In meeting locations where torch demos are unfeasible, they will be substituted with cold demos such as wire working, show participation tutorials, etc. etc. Demos will be coordinated by the program chair (see below). Vice- Moderator- Raychel Stein Vice-moderator will perform the duties of the moderator in their absence. She will also assist the moderator with other duties as they arise. Programs-Carol Saker Program chair will arrange to have demonstrations at each meeting. You may volunteer to demonstrate or suggest demonstration ideas by emailing her at dcsaker@earthlink.net . Program chair will coordinate with the Q & A column author for programs (see newsletter editor below). Education- Judi Binderman Education chair will arrange workshops and demonstrations outside of regular meetings. Membership- vacant Membership chair will make sure new members get information on where and when meetings are. They will occasionally make calls to members, especially ones who have been absent, to make sure they are happy with the ASGB and if not, why not and what can be done to remediate the situation. Vice-membership-Christine Baker I can’t recall what the vice-membership chair does. I assume it is to act as membership chair pro-tem. Secretary- Jodi Lindsey Secretary shall take notes, type minutes, submit for review and disseminate to the members. Jodi also volunteered to get magnetic nametags for everyone to wear at the meetings. Newsletter editor- Judi Binderman has been spending 10 hours producing each issue. She thanked newsletter contributors and requested more articles from members for future issues, which she plans to produce monthly. Submissions are due the second Sunday of the month. Judi suggested a question and answer column, with techniques discussed in the issue also demonstrated at the meeting following the posting of the newsletter. She requested a volunteer to cover that column, or a revolving committee of volunteers to do the research involved. Special Events Chair- vacant Special events chair will coordinate events such as field trips. There was discussion about a group trip to the Heard Sunday, August 3 to hear a lecture on "Fusing Traditions" the Contemporary Native American Glass Artists exhibit now showing through Sept. 16th. There was also talk of renting the Mesa Arts Center at least one day a year for a full day of serial demonstrations, or even multiple torch demonstrations at once. Scheduling- Carolyn Henderson Carolyn will schedule the locations of the meetings as far in advance as possible and inform the members of the schedule. Treasurer- Juanita Dunn Treasurer is keeper of the bank account. Treasurer will report the status of the account at each business meeting. It is hoped that by organizing and filling the newly created positions, we will have greater outreach to our members and the local beadmaking community, and become a more viable organization. Humbly submitted for your perusal, corrections and additions, Laurie Nessel |
